A short afternoon walk for those who spend their holidays in Agia Roumeli is the visit to the castle of Agia Roumeli.
The route is quite uphill and takes about half an hour (another half an hour to return). We are suggesting you to walk the route after evening hours (18.00), when the sun is hidden behind the mountain, but there is still light for safe walking.
The castle is visible from Agia Roumeli, as the trail is located in the mountains north of the village. Moving from the village to the exit of the Samaria Gorge you will see a church behind of which begins the path.
The view from the castle is amazing and this is another reason why it worths it. The return can be made from the path at the back of the castle, which is less steep and overlooks the gorge of Samaria. Attention to the downhill path of return, the ground is not completely stable and you can slip.
