Agia Roumeli

Αγία Ρουμέλη, Χανιά (Agia Roumeli, Chania)

Agia Roumeli is known to be the village in the end of the gorge of Samaria. In the summer when the gorge is open thousands of visitors passes through daily. Usually the village is full of visitors from morning and until leaving the last boat to Chora Sfakia, which transports and the last tourists crossed the canyon and hadn’t planned to stay overnight in the village. After that the village is particularly suitable for relaxing.

The village's beach (fine dark pebbles) is very beautiful and the water crystal clear. Specificity of the area is that is protected from the wind because of the tall mountain that stands west and north. Especially the west, north and northwest winds that plague the south coast of Crete and they are frequent in summer aren’t in the village of Agia Roumeli!

Also, because the village has no road connection with the rest of Crete, you'll rarely see them moving cars or motos to the (few) roads.

The food in the village, especially at night when there is no pressure in servicing large numbers of people is very good. You may find frash meats, vegetables and dairy products of high quality cooked with traditional recipes.

These make the Agia Roumeli rather than a passage at the exit of the Samaria Gorge, and a very good choice for a quiet, relaxing and trouble-free holiday for families and large groups.

Χώρα Σφακίων - Αγία Ρουμέλη (Chora Sfakion - Agia Roumeli)

In Agia Roumeli can go either through the gorge, either by boat from Paleochora or from Sougia or from Bath, from Sfakia and Gavdos. Of course, the above-mentioned areas we can continue our holiday and go by boat from St. Roumeli.
To stay in Agia Roumeli we suggest Artemis Apartments (speak with Athena).
For dinner the restaurant Samaria (talk Manolis) and the tavern Artemis, while beers and a break from swimming in the sea is very convenient in Pauls cafe beach bar!
If we do not like just to relax in our vacation and we are looking for walking, our choices are many:
the castle of Agia Roumeli
The last chilometres of the Samarias Gorge
The route of Ε4 Agia Roumeli-Loutro
The route of E4 Agia Roumeli-Agios Paulos
The route of Ε4 Agia Roumlei- Sougia (very difficult route only for the experienced walkers)
